Thick Haze Covers Northern and Central India Due to Aerosol Pollution
IN · Published Oct 23, 2026
• On 21 October 2026, a dense haze was observed over northern and central India, as captured by NASA's Terra satellite using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS).
• The image revealed significant mud-coloured sediment in the Gulf of Khambhat and widespread haze obscuring much of west-central India.

Impact & Risks

The dense haze poses significant health risks, particularly for individuals with respiratory conditions, as the aerosol pollution can exacerbate breathing difficulties. The stagnant air caused by temperature inversions traps pollutants near the ground, leading to poor air quality. This situation can also reduce visibility, potentially disrupting transportation and daily activities in the affected regions.
